The social system that informed Sergeant Price's decision to "Take Care" of his dog was an act called "Operation Scooby" which they normally carried out when he was in the United States marines, him and guys in his battalion would shoot dogs on purpose on the streets.Price owned a dog named Vicar back home so he definitely was a dog person and this was had for him but he had to kill those dogs during the operations. Also the beliefs which influenced his action was when he got back home and saw the pain his dog was going through he had to do something. Sergeant Price believed in merciful death which means killing to relief someone of the suffering they are going through.“We found this one insurgent doing the death rattle, foaming and shaking, fucked up, you know?” (Redeployment) Sergeant Price did not believe in slow killing he believed in quick killing with less pain.He had to kill his dog Vicar quick to relief the dog both from the pain the dog was going through and also the pain from death. Another belief Price had that influenced his action was he did not like the idea of taking his dog to the vet he disliked the idea of someone putting their hands on his dog.“And I thought of Cheryl bringing Vicar to the vet, of some stranger putting his hands on my dog, and I thought, I have to do this.” (Redeployment). The action Price took was a hard choice but the best because he loved his dog so much that he could not bear to see him suffer. It is better for Vicar to be death that live each day struggling with pain.
