English Composition 1 Course is a class I wished lasted longer. I found myself more engaged in writing. My This I Wonder Essay was a writing project that I did not struggle with,I saw it as an opportunity to open up my emotions that I had kept bottled in and wanted to express. The only problem was I had to shorten the story because it would have been too long. I wanted to write every second of the event because they were all important to me. The This I Argue Essay was also a great writing process although, I struggles a bit trying to figure out what topic to focus on because I had a lot of topics. Through it all this is one class i don't want to end. I had great minds as classmates and our Professor Sabatino Mangini is a wonderful inspirational Instructor who has a superpower in making his students love writing. Yes i say superpower becuase he was born to teach writing that is one great talent he has. I can say I am leaving this class not the way I came but much more a better writer. All thanks to my Classmates for their comments on my blogs, help during workshops and to my Professor Sabatino Mangini you all made this experience worth the while.

Source Material Hunger - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia A Place at the Table (IMDB) Witnesses to Hunger The Hunger Maps: Taking a New Look at Food Deserts A Place at the Table - Catholic Charities USA What is SNAP Fraud? | Food and Nutrition Service July 1942: United We Stand: History of the Motto. Argument Summary: In my opinion, hunger can be a thing of the past in America through united effort. Effort from the government, the people and charities. The government are doing more than enough but that does not mean that they should stop caring or hearing the cry of the people. The government should create small farmlands around food desert areas, the people should stop being lazy and do something and the charities should continue to be a source of help to the people. Therefore through united effort hunger can be eradicated in America. What Is The True Definition Of Hunger? Can Hunger Be A Thing Of The Past In America?
What is hunger? Can hunger be fully defined?. Different countries have different interpretations and experience of hunger. A 2012 documentary called A Place at the Table (IMDB) shows the different lives and struggle of American citizens who experiences hunger. “People do not die of hunger in America like Africa” (A Place At The Table). When hunger comes to mind, we think of children with big stomach's, tiny legs and hands in Africa and Asia, but we never acknowledge the fact that hunger does exist in America. No one should experience hunger even at the mildest form because hunger can affect education and the future generation. Hunger can be a thing of the past in America through a united effort from the government and charities. Citizens have complained about the government not doing enough in the aspect of hunger. This can be seen in the situation where Dr Mariana Chilton in The Place At The Table documentary founded the Witnesses to Hunger programme where citizens spoke out to the government about the struggles they encounter. This is true but the American government is a caring government because most countries do not have food assistance programmes but America created Food stamp programme and many more. The government is doing more than enough but does this mean they should stop hearing the cry of their people?. The government increasing Food stamp is not a major way of eradicating hunger in America. Different approaches have been taken to make hunger become a thing of the past but hunger is growing worse even through the years of effort by the government. Approximately 50 million are hungry in America (A Place At The Table). One major issue is Food desert. Food desert is an area where there is lack of fresh good food. The government can help eradicate hunger by developing small farmlands around those areas, so there can be easy access to fresh healthy food like fruits and vegetables The Hunger Maps: Taking a New Look at Food Deserts . The government can also increase the price of processed unhealthy food and reduce the price of fresh food. Thereby, making fresh healthy food accessible and affordable to people in hunger. In addition, the Charities have been a great help to people and they are doing more than enough A Place at the Table - Catholic Charities USA. Most charities are not owned by millionaires, they are owned by normal average living citizens who out of compassion felt they could do something to change the situation of hunger. Just like the pastor who helped in feeding Rosie and many other children by giving them after school meals (A Place At The Table). The pastor was never tired of helping, he kept increasing the supply of food over the years. This tells us the sacrifice charities render just to feed hungry people. Therefore charities are a great help to hungry people and they should be recognized for that. Although charities are doing enough. We need more people in the charity aspect. What has civilians who struggle through hunger done to bring themselves out? Must people keep waiting and relying on the government food assistance. What do they do when they get the food assistance. Some of these people, when they get the food stamps, they go around looking for where to sell them Snap Freud What is SNAP Fraud? | Food and Nutrition Service. When they get the money they use it to buy drugs, increasing violence and crime rate in the country. Some others who rely on the government are sometimes just to lazy for handwork. This laziness can increase more drastically if the food stamp is increased because people wont want to work. Think of it why do people work? They work to put food on their tables and when people see that there is always going to be food stamps, they wouldn't want to work affecting the upcoming children. This affects the upcoming children's mindset, their motivation and their education. Children will see no reason in going to school because there will always food from the government. Thereby affecting our future generation, which of our children are going to be the great Scientist who would discover great theories?. Which Doctors will invent great skills to being healthy? no one because when the education aspect is affected definitely there wont be career holders in future. Therefore people have to stand up, do something and stop relying on the government alone and be a good model to our upcoming children. Have we ever wondered? will people be satisfied when the increase on food stamp is met? . The case of Barbie the single mother at (A Place At The Table) is a clear example. When she had no Job she complained that she couldn’t feed her family and even after she got a Job the complain increased saying it was better when she had the food stamp. The government put a minimum amount to being eligible for food stamp to create a balance between those who earn enough and people who earn less or nothing at all. What more do we want from the government? People will not be satisfied if there is an increase on food assistance programmes instead more complains would rise up from people who barely passed the limit of the minimum amount to be eligible for food stamp. In my opinion the people who go through the turmoil of hunger are the children born into it. Most of these children become medically ill due to the lack of healthy food. This can be seen in Barbie's son who had developed medical problems and also in Tremonica's case who had obesity problem(A Place At The Table). Children are our future, so we should create a better world for them. Barbie at A Place At The Table documentary said at the end "Everyone has a place at the table". Everyone definitely deserves a place at the table but we all have to work together to ensure that, what we meet at the table is healthy, rich and palatable. Therefore, hunger definitely can be a thing of the past in America through United effort.
America should provide more money for snap because clearly it is not enough, and that seems to be the reason why hunger has increased overtime because snap has been cut to fund the No Kid Hungry Campaign and other food programmes, which keeps coming back to the same situation hunger but I feel if S.N.A.P was increased it would not only help parents who struggle with hunger but also their kids and their education. Healthy children would lead to a great generation in future..
Food insecurity surely is people not knowing where their next meal is going to come from, and this is a frustrating situation because people in this situation have no idea what to do. Starving is detrimental to health, people who even eat once a day can also be defined as been starved. America should define what is important to the country a healthy generation in future or a future that has already been withered away by starvation. America should cut funds from the market of processed food and give those funds to the market of fresh good food and also increase S.N.A.P and other food programmes.
No I do not live in a food desert but I can imagine what people who live in food deserts go through each day not getting the healthy food they need. America should try and grow agricultural farm lands close to food deserts that way it would be easy to access.
America should not rely on charity to feed the hungry because America is the richest country this is a test and we just have to prove ourselves by defeating hunger so the government put in more effort to eliminate hunger than rely on charity.
Create farming subsidies especially among food desert areas.
No one should rely on food banks or even the government all the time, get out look for something to do try developing ideas to become better and not get to rely on food assistance. Most times people do not have a choice but rely on food banks and other food assistance programmes because they have run out of options. "A place at the table" is a documentary film directed by Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush. This movie talks about the fact that millions of Americans go through hunger even though America is the richest country. Civilians were asked to share their struggles with hunger, most of these civillians were Rosie a fifth grader in Collbran Colorado, Barbie Izquierdo a single mom who lives in philadelphia and Tremonica a second grader. It also spoke about how the government has played a role in the issue of hunger in America.
Rosie a fifth grader in Colorado took us into her day to day life, her mother never recieved government assistance or food stamps so it was really hard to put food on the table. Most times Rosie would not be able to focus in school because she is always hungry and this decreases her educational ability. Rosie's teacher also spoke about the fact that she also went through food insecurity which is not knowing where your next meal is going to come from, so she volunteered to help by bringing food bags not only to Rosie's but people who were also going through the same situation. It also spoke about how different churches and charities try to do something to stop the hunger by providing meals for people. Barbie a single mother who lost her job but always had to struggle with getting food on the table for her kids spoke about how through lack of nutrition her son Aiden developed medical problems, she also said that "people do not die of hunger in America like Africa but hunger might be next door and you never get to know because people are too ashamed to admit it". She joined the witness to hunger programme founded by Dr Mariana Chilton which helped to bring awareness to hunger by speaking out. Barbie later found a job but this time she stopped receiving food stamps because food stamp is eligible to people according to their income and her income was more than the minimum and it was like this time the hunger became worse because she had to do the buying of the groceries herself. Tremonica a 2nd grader and asthma patient who also struggled with hunger was overweight because she did not get the right kind of food she needed. IT was said that the price of fresh food has gone up overtime while the relative price of processed food has gone down. So when people go to the store they get unhealthy food like chips than fruits because it is cheaper. Food desert was also spoken of, the situation where there is no access to fresh good food. When the issue of hunger was raised to the government they most times acted like it was irrelevant and even when the Healthy, Hungry Free Food Act and The No Kid Hungry Campaign was implemented half of the bill was cut from food stamps and other food programmes which keeps coming back to one same thing hunger. THE EAGLE RISING ABOVE THE STORM........
Here I am, standing beside the hospital bed and there laid the most exciting uncle ever. My uncle who is an extrovert, a man with words of wisdom. This time he was mute, he could not move and his eyes were closed. I kept thinking while standing. What's wrong? "What has made my exciting uncle turn so cold and quiet?". The doctor comes in to check on him and I ask "Doctor what's wrong? Is my uncle going to be fine?" The doctor smiled and said "I will do my best to see to that" I asked again "Is there anything I can do?" and the doctor replied "Just be strong" the doctor left and I continued with my thoughts "I wish I can do something, anything, maybe a superpower to bring my uncle to his normal self". I see sweats dripping down his face, I get a towel and a bowl of water and I start to clean up his face, there and then his closed eyes turned open and he smiled. I felt excitement running through my veins. I was waiting for a word of wisdom maybe but still he remained mute. My uncle named Henry, was my father's youngest brother and also my best friend, we would play and laugh, most times have arguments but he still remained my best uncle. Whenever my uncle was around, boring moments never seemed to exist. A man in his 30's but spoke like a man who had lived a thousand year's. There came a time, my uncle complained of having pains around his body. We took the pains to be normal, maybe from gym workouts. It was a lovely evening in Nigeria, the breeze blew softly and cool. I walked out the entrance door to the house and at the garden chair laid my uncle as quiet as a new born baby but as weak as a wounded lion amazed at what my sight saw, I went straight to him and said "Uncle Henry Goodevening" with a fainted voice he replied"How are you Amaka" Curious enough i asked "are you alright" And he said "yes I am" He struggled to get up and I sat beside him,he was about to say something when he started coughing out blood, I ran inside to call my grandma, she came out running with me. When we got there his mouth was filled with blood,i got some water quickly gave him some to wash off his mouth and we washed his face. My grandma said "we are going to the hospital now Henry" And he shouted "No I don't want to" We all did not know what to do,take him to the hospital or let him be. Before long he was up and about talking about his high school days, although the story was quite interesting i could not get myself to forget the scene of him coughing out blood, so i abruptly changed the topic by asking a question "Uncle henry tell me. "Why dont you want to go get help from the hospital?" He said with a parabled word"When an eagle see"s a storm coming,he doesnt run away instead he goes up to the tallest mountains and spreads out his wings, and when the storm comes it does not blow the eagle away, it lifts the eagle up" Puzzled I asked "what does your answer mean?" He said "In due time you will know dear" He then went back to telling his tales. It became dark and we all went to bed. My uncle was a very different kind of person. You had to always try to understand his words, most times you would never get to understand. He had a little daughter whom he loved very much, she was an important aspect of his life. He believed that "children were the eyes of tommorow" i never understood this phrase, but I knew impacting knowledge in the young ones was his hobby. I had gone to go stay at my aunties place, because I was taking my high school final exams and my aunties house was a wonderful environment to read. We normally visited the family house once in a while because we were still in the same city. On the 17th of April 2011 we went visiting, when we got there my Uncle was lying down on his bed. My auntie asked him "Are you alright Henry?" This time he replied "No I'm not feeling too well" We were all startled because that was the first time he has ever said that. My auntie asked "What do you want ? Do you want to go to the hospital?" as usual he said "No" My auntie this time refused to that reply and had wanted to take him to the hospital but then he said "No one should take me to the hospital without my consent or I will never forgive that person" Hearing that my aunty then asked him "What will you eat?" he said he wanted some fruits. My auntie gave me some money and I left to go buy the fruits .I got back and it was time to go home with my aunty, so I bid him good bye. It was past 3am in the morning my auntie received a call from a cousin of our's who also lived in the family house saying "Henry is just here saying some weird things he hasn't eaten and he cant move" This was when we realized it was really bad. My auntie ordered my cousin to take him to the hospital, telling him that we would meet him at the hospital. We got to the hospital, and he was already admitted. The doctors kept running test's to find out what was going wrong. In thoughts, I wanted to do something but I couldn't. I went back home and the next morning we received a call which said "the great tree in the middle of the forest had fallen". Chills went down my veins, the eagle had finally risen, my uncle was dead. I kept thinking "Was this what he meant by the eagle rising above the storm?"" was he expecting to die?" Questions filled my heart. Before his death he was diagnosed with liver failure. My family always went for medical check up, but my uncle was the only one who never believed in it, he was always reluctant. What if he had gone to the doctors earlier? Would there have been a different story?. Maybe if the doctors tried their best enough, he would still be alive. One thing I was sure of was I never wanted to be in that situation again. Where i would see someone in pain and not be able to do anything. Then I made the decision of becoming a doctor. I know I was not able to save my uncle but i can save someone in future. My Uncle always said "children are the eyes of tomorrow" Maybe I am the eyes of tomorrow in this career that I am embarking on. Becoming a doctor is not an easy task but Like an eagle I am ready to rise above the storm, just like my Uncle did. This blog entry is designed to transform my This I Wonder Essay into a found poem. Add Comment The social system that informed Sergeant Price's decision to "Take Care" of his dog was an act called "Operation Scooby" which they normally carried out when he was in the United States marines, him and guys in his battalion would shoot dogs on purpose on the streets.Price owned a dog named Vicar back home so he definitely was a dog person and this was had for him but he had to kill those dogs during the operations. Also the beliefs which influenced his action was when he got back home and saw the pain his dog was going through he had to do something. Sergeant Price believed in merciful death which means killing to relief someone of the suffering they are going through.“We found this one insurgent doing the death rattle, foaming and shaking, fucked up, you know?” (Redeployment) Sergeant Price did not believe in slow killing he believed in quick killing with less pain.He had to kill his dog Vicar quick to relief the dog both from the pain the dog was going through and also the pain from death. Another belief Price had that influenced his action was he did not like the idea of taking his dog to the vet he disliked the idea of someone putting their hands on his dog.“And I thought of Cheryl bringing Vicar to the vet, of some stranger putting his hands on my dog, and I thought, I have to do this.” (Redeployment). The action Price took was a hard choice but the best because he loved his dog so much that he could not bear to see him suffer. It is better for Vicar to be death that live each day struggling with pain.
